Sehr geehrte Interessierte,
Leitfragen

Dear interested parties,
Germany is actively recruiting workers from abroad to address labour shortages, while the number of international students continues to grow. Public debate often focuses on recruitment and arrival. Far less attention is paid to what happens next: under what conditions do people study, work, find housing and build a life in Germany?
For some international students and recently arrived migrants, delivery work offers a relatively accessible source of income. At the same time, platform-based delivery work can involve insecure employment arrangements, unclear responsibilities between platforms and intermediaries, and limited scope for enforcing rights.
The 30-minute documentary The Delivery Guy by Debarun Dutta follows two South Asian migrants who came to Berlin as students and now work as food delivery riders. Through their experiences, the film explores how work, migration status, housing, education and participation in society intersect in everyday life.
Taking these experiences as a starting point, without treating them as representative of all migrant delivery workers, this DeZIM Lunch Discussion explores broader dynamics of migration, platform work and labour rights.
The discussion takes place shortly before the 2 December 2026 deadline for Germany to transpose the EU Platform Work Directive, amid ongoing debates about subcontracting and direct employment in delivery services. It offers a timely opportunity to ask what regulatory reform can achieve and where wider migration, education and social policy frameworks also shape workers lives.
Guiding Questions
What does The Delivery Guy show us about how migration, study, work and everyday life intersect in Berlin?
Why is delivery work relatively accessible to some international students and recently arrived migrants, and how do migration status, employment arrangements, housing and education shape their opportunities and rights?
What can workers achieve through organising, and what responsibilities lie with platforms, subcontractors, public authorities, trade unions and other organisations?
